This past week, I had the pleasure of working with my newest cyberfriend, Joni Liebel, on some blog header designs for her two sites and I thought they might make a good spotlight topic.

The first one, JoniLiebel.com, is her coaching site.

It's sometimes hard for me, when I come across a site like this, to know what kind of input I should offer. There are a couple of things I just didn't like, so rather than just come right out and say so, I usually send some feelers out to see how committed they are to the design and how open they are to suggestions.

I first learned this lesson when I was just getting started as a sign maker, I made the mistake of disparaging the design of the owners daughter. While it may have been amateurish from a sign guy perspective it was nevertheless a work of art to the owner, who abrubtly left my shop red-faced and never returned.

Note to self: Keep mouth shut.

I sent Joni an email with my initial suggestions and quickly found that she was the kind of person I love to work with. She listened carefully and was open to my suggestions and seemed to trust my ability to design something she'd like.

I set up a test site for her to look at the design ideas I came up with for her blog. I uploaded a fresh copy of the Celestial Aura theme because I had never used it before and immediately liked the 880px default width because the existing 1000px fixed width really bothered me.

I suggested a photo would be a good idea, putting a face to the name and she agreed. In fact, she had just had some photographs taken (something more than 100 of them) and she was in the process of editing a few. She mentioned that she liked a classic typeface, so I put together this mockup for her using one of the pictures I picked out.

I used a gaussian blur of one of my photographs of fall foliage for the background. She liked it. Now to make it work with her theme.

I liked the new blue navbar and thought the background should probably stay blue to match. I had a seamless background I got from istockphoto that was feminine looking and even though it was green, I could do an overlay on the existing blue background and voila, a seamless blue background.

Now to figure out how to make it work with the theme. The header background actually matched the green better, but I decided to change the background color instead. I zoomed in on the image more and texturized the stripe.

Here is the completed blog.

Aarrrggghh. This is a problem. Sometimes a background doesn't realize that it's supposed to be in the background…time for a quick change.

Joni actually wanted me to go with a white background, but I like my backgrounds to have a bit of movement, so I washed out the color to show a hint of blue.

What do you think?

It's been a little while since my last blog post, so i thought I'd quickly talk about a recent blog header design project.

I was contacted by Doug Stewart to produce a blog header design in the old propaganda poster style like this.

PT-00143-D0000-0365-4

It's one of my all-time favorite design styles, in fact, early in my sign career I used this as my logo and showed it to Doug.

He wrote back and said that I was right on track.

As you can see, I was going to have a little problem with this theme because it has a very short header and finding a graphic that would still have impact value wasn't going to be easy.

I sent him my first draft to gauge his reaction and get some additional input. I thought it captured the feeling of the early propaganda posters, but still needed some refining.

Doug replied that he thought the outline made the copy hard to read and he wanted me to tweak the flag.

The thing is, by the time I heard back from Doug, I had already abandoned the original design and had come up with three alternate header designs I wanted him to look at.

p2f2-575

p2f3-575

p2f4-575

On the last one, I really felt like I was close to the final. I just didn't like the fist. Doug had mentioned a hammer and so I searched my library for something I could use.

I found a drawing in an old book and just took the hammer and fist off the artwork and tweaked the colors to match mine.  After which, I decided to change the blog title color to a burgundy.

I sent all six to Doug and let him choose. He loved them all but went with my final. I also suggested he change the background color to a dark blue for a more attractive look.

What do you think? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I received a blog header design request from someone that remembered the work I did for folks on the LBB forum. I kinda recalled his name, but I am getting older.

Anyway, Mike Boyd had a photography client that needed a new header.

He was using the Wordpress Spring Blossom theme which is a very clean coded theme and easy to reconfigure.

He also attached his clients logo and a request to find a way to put some changeable sales copy. It’s a good thing I was a signguy all those years. Prioritizing copy with panels is something I learned at my first Letterhead meet way back in I think 1982 talking about a recently deceased old timer named Chester Cunningham, a master sign guy.

Everything needs to go together without fighting each other for attention.

So a black and white site and the logo is brown and turquoise. There are a few ways I can go with this and so I just went with my gut feeling that a textured background, maybe linen would look good and so I shot this design over to him along with some questions about colors and images.

The champagne and roses with a luminosity filter looked okay and the panel with the sales copy was okay too, but it lacked any "pop". And we all know how I like the utilize the "WOW factor". Meaning if it doesn’t make me go WOW! it needs some more tweaking.

My new friend from England, Max Stanworth, the owner of Design Shard , is offering some Free Hi-Res Stock Picture Frame Images.  I thought these would be an ultra cool touch that would make this design come together.

Mike wrote back and told me the client wanted him to stay consistent with her existing site, so I looked at a white background. with the new frame idea.

I like the color in the roses and love the picture frame, but the white background doesn’t really work for me.

So I went back to the textured background.

I sent this over to Mike and he loved it. He’s got it up already on his site…Philadelphia Wedding Photographer

I was okay with the design and it was definitely worth what he paid for it, but I had an idea that I liked better. You know I’m kinda partial to animated headers? Right? Did you notice my header is a rotating image? Yeah I thought so.

I thought, what if I had some wedding shots rotating in the picture frame…now that would be COOL.

Okay, that’s it. By the way, I didn’t tell Mike about this idea. He was already happy.

Now I am.

I’d like to know your thoughts on this design. Really.

I’m still trying to work out the kinks inherent in this flexx theme from iThemes.

I’ve gotten a few emails asking about what my purpose is for starting this site. Really?

I thought it was pretty obvious.

Anyway, I’ve been trying to find a way to work from home online for the last couple of years. Doing something that I really enjoy that has the potential to pay the bills. Not as easy as it sounds.

I’ve messed around with several dozen business models over the years, i.e. affiliate marketing, article marketing, even blogging, but find that I love designing best. I always have.

When I was a sign maker, I learned early on that if I could wow you with my design, the sale was mine. In a local market, that’s not too hard to accomplish. But here in cyberspace, the competition is relentlessly awesome and finding a niche is the hardest thing I’ve tried.

That’s why I settled on blog header designs. Almost every website needs them and with the plethora (multitude, whole lot, tons) of free blog themes, I saw a place where I could help.

I mean, why should you use a free blog template that thousands of others are using without taking the inexpensive step of individualizing your new blog theme to reflect more of your own personality? You can be assured that there won’t be another like it.

Sure, you can find hundreds, if not thousands, of PLR website header packs that contain up to 250 headers. Usually these are pretty lame and look like all the rest. I know, I have thousands of them.

So, there you have it. What do you expect from a site called the Blogheaderguy.com?

Please bear with me as I develop this site and work out the kinks. I’d appreciate it if you would take a minute and leave me a comment or two.

CommentLuv will be rewarded

And the winner is…

Audrey Harvey, a veterinary surgeon from Australia..WOOHOOO.

Every week, on Wednesday evening, I will randomly draw a winners name from the drawing database. The lucky winner will get a free custom designed blog header.

These are not stock headers with some text dropped in, these are custom blog header designs that I will create for you.

Audrey has a site she is developing called KidsBusinessWorld.com that is going to teach young people about earning their own pocket money.

I came up with a couple of variations and want to show them here.

Here’s another idea using the same text with another graphic

So what do you think? Your comments will be appreciated.

My wife has caught the blogging bug and wanted to start a wordpress.com blog on Natural Parenting called Mama By Nature. Of course she came to me to create a custom blog header for her.

And since she was the only one to signup for the free header drawing at the time, I did hers for free.  :)

No, wait, I would have done it for free anyway…really.

She used the Wordpress theme - MistyLook – a two column theme with a nice clean look. I liked the header art arrangement in this theme.

Really honey, I would have done this for free anyway. But look at it this way, you’re the first winner of my free blog header drawing.

You’re a winner, isn’t that great? Right?

Looks like I’ve got some family repair work to do…later.

How do you like it?
